As I was narrating in my previous post , my journey as a copywriter which I am experiencing now is kind of funny. Rejections at every stage and promises by media people makes me feel that am learning something from every refusal. This is going to make me strong.  As someone had rightly said, it is not how many times you fell down but its how many times you get up after being hit hard .

One saturday when I was completely upset about me not doing anything, after a course of self-motivatring an idea sprang up in my mind. I thought “Why should I not go approaching agencies for a chance to write?.” But later I felt like a goat that was going to a slaughter house. That was what people told me. They told me that they will take your work from you, pay you less or will not pay you sometimes and so on. But my gut feeling was very strong and I approached an agency which saw my work ( I had written sopies for them in one day). I gave them a copy for Southern railways. Though they took all the time in getting back to me, I was in touch with them . This contact fetched me one project for which I had to go and convince the client. I am sure the feeling i had that day was exactly the feeling Sachin would have been through when he hit his first century or when Saurav Ganguly was taken into the team.

” My first project .” It was unbelievable.

All the confidence I had when I approached my first agency first was “YES, I can do it.” I really don’t know the source of that confidence then. Now, before I approach any potential client I think for a second and try to resort to THATconfidence that I had when I first approached an agency.

I look at it this way. Are you robbing the client?

NO.

Are you cheating them?

NO. Then why get scared as hell and do a poor show. When you want to be a copywriter, talk like a copywriter and I started practicing that.

I knew I was just promoting my service to them. If they like my service they will hire me as a freelancer for them. Or, if they dont hire you, remember, we will learn something.  Once an agency or an organisation hires you half the job is done.

The next stage is for all those writers who enjoy to be left alone in solitude so that they can think about the product and come up with ideas. Trust me! If you get into the habit of thinking about the next concept or the headline, Welcome to the club. You will pay wrong bills, get into the wrong bus, light a cigarette in reverse, and so on. But this phase is amazing, as in who gets an opportunity to become a ‘thinker’ all of  a sudden. Its amazing.

On the other hand, it gives me immense pleasure when I think and when I can say people that I have a calling of life or a goal for life (for which the time-line has to be set yet .) Isn’t that great. Just 3 months ago, I din’t know what I need in life, I thought I was in a wrong job, not happy with the pay/work. I can’t even think of going back to that stage again.

Good or Bad, I want to take my passion and dream ahead. Take it ahead so far, that when I look back in future I should feel I worked my way to the top.

One day things changed all of a sudden. Thank my stars or the frustration that day,  I strongly felt that I should atleast make a start somewhere to get what I wanted. Realising that Internet was very powerful and so is Orkut, I browsed through the categories of advertising and found a gentlemen in there.  He was so helpful that he has given me a few contacts in hyderabad. Thats how I began calling my self a copywriter. This copy will always remain close to my heart.

My happiness knew no bounds after that. People said that they have never seen me that confident. I had so many plans like having an advertising business of my own, write marketing copies for all possible things. Like always my enemy laziness slowed down everything. After a very long time, I understood that I should continue to do things and follow up on them. Also, I realised my dream is rally far away and I have to work a lot to get there.

Now, we have advertising agencies, in house advertising departments, third party associates, and last but not the least ‘Freelance advertisers’.

I am one of these zealous freelance advertisers specialized in print advertising. With lots of dreams and ambitions to make it big in advertising have undertaken freelancing as a career option apart from an online advertising specialist for a leading MNC. It’s never too late to start anything. So I am here waiting for projects.
